Can I put old refinished cedar fence in as flooring in my house if I plane it, sand, stain and seal it?
Question by Darrell P: Can I put old refinished cedar fence in as flooring in my house if I plane it, sand, stain and seal it?
Is cedar too soft for flooring? Is that why I don’t see it anywhere? I see old cedar fences being torn down and thrown away all the time, so I thought that maybe I could replane and cut it and glue it in. Then sand it all and stain it, then seal it. Will that work?

For heavens sake don’t STAIN cedar !!! Yes it will work but you will have to seal it with sanding sealer then about 4 coats of polyurethane.

Q&A: Cedar siding cost compared to James hardie?
Question by bailey b: Cedar siding cost compared to James hardie?
We got 3 quotes for our siding to be done in James Hardie siding…All were around 40,000. Way more then we would like to spend. Whats the price differnce we are looking at if we were to get cedar or pine. We know the maintinance is much more, but we are only planning on being here for 5 more years and really don’t want to invest 40,000 on siding if we don’t have to.

I understand its hard to swallow . (40000) but think about the trees that have to be cut to make that siding . hardie is a greener way to go .

Q&A: How do you fix cosmetic cracks in cedar clapboard siding.?
Question by Laura P: How do you fix cosmetic cracks in cedar clapboard siding.?
I recently bought a home. The inspector listed some cracks in siding to either repair or replace. When I questioned him about the severity, he did not feel there was major damage, just mostly cosmetic and that I could wait to address when houses needs restaining again in a few years. However, I would like to know if there is something i can use to fill in some of the little cracks, etc.
Best answer:
Answer by digitalwrangler
if the crack isnt causing the boards to fall off, then a stainable putty can be used. Another option may be to cut out the damaged section (preferrably at a stud) and retack a new piece up (this can be a pain, though, depending how tight the adjacent boards above it are.)

What’s your opinion on this story?
Question by : What’s your opinion on this story?
Things used to be different. You wouldn’t believe how badly I wanted things to go back to the way they were. I used to run everyday while my dad watched my little brothers, but it is different now. Now I run maybe once a week while Hannah from next door watches them for an hour or two. I wish things could go back to the way they were, but they can’t and I understand that. So that little running I do get done, I’m really thankful for.
Running allows me to clear my brain, the rhythm of it all bringing me to ease. This time of the year the library’s trail is littered with leaves; the sound of them crunching under my favorite pair of tennis shoes adds to the noise I’ve come to love so much. For every breath I take, I inhale a bit of the cool air that pierces my lungs. My braided brown hair is like a whip, beating my neck with each step. I had just began to get lost in the rhythm of it all when I fell; tumbling into a dip in the trail, I felt this sharp pain as I rolled down the five feet worth of hill. The trail was surrounded by a dense forest ,so I hit about nine trees in the short distance. Oh, what fun! After about a second or two of just laying there trying to take in what happen, I sat up, trying to see what exactly I had tripped over. Lifting my head I could make out a long brown death trap just lying there mocking me.
Frustrated, I stood up, hoping to make up for all the time I lost. But the moment I stood up I knew I wouldn’t be making up the time I’ve lost anytime soon. As I stood up a sharp shooting pain came from my calf, worse then any shin-splits I’ve ever had. Yet I wasn’t going to cry. I never cry. Not at my dad’s funeral two months earlier, not when my fish died, not when my guy friends started to act weird around me, not when I came in last in the short distance. If I never cried then, I sure wasn’t going to cry now.
My survival brain kicked in. This was Michigan so I only had to worry about chipmunk, squirrels, raccoons, birds and the occasional snake. Nothing like wolves or lions the could tear me to shreds. I wasn’t going to die, but I wasn’t going to be able to leave either; I couldn’t walk. Nobody is on the trail because very few people have heard of it, so yelling would not do any good. Lucky me, I had my cell phone with me, so I could call someone to rescue me. But the big question was who to call. Most of my friends went to Cedar Pointe this weekend. That eliminates Ryan, Michael, Steven, John, Bailey, Mary, Jamie, Penelope and Sam from the possible call list running in my head. My mom was working, and Hannah can’t drive or leave the boys to come get me because Jeremy is only ten and he definitely couldn’t take care of the twins and little Josh. Who’s left? I thought racking my brain. This left Annabeth, Wyatt and …there was someone else. Who? Searching through my contact list on my cell I found the name I had forgotten! Eric. I’ll save him for last.
Dialing Annabeth’s number I tried to stand up to pace, something I always do when on the phone but the pain quickly got me back on the ground. As it rang, I pleaded with the phone to make Annabeth answer. I didn’t want to have to ask Wyatt or Eric because awkwardness between us was almost to much to bare. Suddenly I got Annabeth’s voicemail message.
“Hey, there, this is Annabeth. Leave a message.”
I hung up in anguish, only to hesitantly open the phone again to dial Wyatt’s number. Just as I was about to hit send I remembered something important. He’s at his grandmother’s house. Which wouldn’t be a problem if she didn’t live in Texas. So not being helpful Wyatt!
At this point I was getting really fed up with my friends. I had always been there for them, right? When Sam’s little brother was in the hospital I went to go visit him. When John lost his keys playing baseball I was the one who got on my hands and knees and found the stupid things in left field. When Jamie lost her internet connection ,I offered to let her come to my house to do her research paper on George Washington. When Steven was running late and missed the bus I was the one who came to pick him up. So why is it that when I need them, they’re not here? How come when I need someone to come to my rescue no one comes? After a moment or two of ranting I begin to think clearer. I realized it wasn’t their fault. They weren’t the one running. They didn’t know I was going to trip. They didn’t see me on the ground and walk away. No, they don’t know I’m on the ground so they can’t come; there is nothing they can do.
As a last hope I dialed Eric’s number. It goes through instantly. This doesn’t surprise me. The one person I’d rather not talk to is the one that answers his phone. Of course.
“Hello, this is Eric,” Eric’s voice comes over the phone surprising me.
“Hey Eric, this is Susan. Can you do me a favor” If he couldn’t, I’d have to wait three hours for my mom to come home. No matter how few threats there are in the forest it was something

I read the first paragraph. There are unnecessary sentences and words. The reader likes to be treated like they are smart. They dont like to be told something three or four times in one paragraph. Here is a revise,

How do you know the difference between mountain cedar allergy symptoms and those of the common cold?
Question by MariaB: How do you know the difference between mountain cedar allergy symptoms and those of the common cold?
My sister lives in San Antonio, and the allergy count is really high. She has stuffy nose, red eyes, sore throat, and no fever. Is it safe to assume that she just has allergies, or is it a cold?
Best answer:
Answer by Jim R
Yep, that’s almost assuredly “Cedar Fever”. The easiest way to tell is if a lot of other people are complaining of similiar symptoms (which right now they certainly are, myself included.) Of course, there’s always a chance that it’s a cold, but if her eyes are red because they’re itchy, then that’s most likely alergies.

Is it necessary to pressure wash cedar before staining?
Question by lulu: Is it necessary to pressure wash cedar before staining?
We hired a student company to stain our cedar deck we had put in last year. They basically tore our deck apart into what I would call a splintered nightmare and some of the deck spindles are even cracked and breaking. They did an awful job and now I dont know what to do. I dont want them to continue with the work and I am calling the guy that built our deck to do a damage report so I can sue the company for the cost of having a new deck built. What does everyone think about the whole thing?
Best answer:
Answer by Lakota Bob
First, you hire professionals.
Never use a powerwasher on soft woods because it can “etch” the wood.
Sand off the splitered areas and restain or paint the whole deck.
I’m unclear as to why the spindles are cracked and breaking … did the original carpenter use “salt treated lumber?” If not, HE may be the guy who’s at fault. Only salt treated wood is weather resistant … powerwashing wont crack a spindle.
Next time, clean your deck with bleach and water. 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Use a bucket and a scrub brush, then rinse. You can stain after 24 hours.

HELP??? Looking for correct procedures and products to paint porch and seal cedar decking?
Question by justasskin: HELP??? Looking for correct procedures and products to paint porch and seal cedar decking?
We pressure washed the entire porch last weekend to remove mildew from the white painted surface of the posts and railings and also to clean the sealed surface of the cedar porch floor.
During the pressure washing process, we removed a couple areas of the white paint and even a couple areas of wood. Before moisture gets into the wood, I’d like to repair the areas where we weren’t so gentle with the pressure washer, repaint the posts and railings and seal the cedar floor of the porch. All of this, hopefully, without having to sand everything.
Should I use a wood putty or caulking to patch the holes on the railings? Product recommendations??
Should I use a specific kind of paint to make sure it adheres to the already painted surface as well as the repaired areas?
Easy product to use for sealing the cedar??
Best sequence of activities….patch, paint railings, seal floor?
I’m going for best quality… meaning…. I don’t want to do this every year.
Thanks.

Answer by jitterbugjims
first you will have to allow the wood to dry.before painting you will have to lightly sand the previosly painted area to allow the new paint to adhere.repair/replace any areas needed.prep rails and posts for painting and lastly seal the decking.one of the best sealent out there is a product called cuponol.i have used it many times on a variety of material and have never been dissapointed.a product like thompsons water seal has to be applied yearly,so i would stay away from that.good luck
